We all are familiar with the “Duluth run” when we head to The Big City to pick up those little things that we just can’t find in Cook County. I’d imagine that when Senior Rides volunteers find themselves with a little time to spare waiting for clients to be picked up, they may do a little Duluth “mini-run.” But I’d also imagine there may be times when that isn’t going to work, or it isn’t necessary. Then what? Here are a couple of ideas for places to go and take a short walk or enjoy a moment to relax and breathe.
- When dropping off clients at St. Luke’s or Essentia Health downtown, you are very close to Leif Erikson Park and the Duluth Rose Garden (both on the Duluth Lakewalk.)
- From St. Luke’s Building A, it’s about 1/4 mile to the park and 1/2 mile to the rose garden
- From Essentia/St. Mary’s the park is about 1/2 mile away and the rose garden is about a mile away.
- If you’re in the Hermantown area you may want to check out Stebner Park.
- About 2 1/2 miles away from Relf Eye Clinic
- A little more than 4 miles away from Arrowpointe Medical Center on Rice Lake Rd
- Enger Park is one of my favorite places with lovely gardens/landscaping and wonderful views of the lake. It’s about a ten minute or so drive from either Hermantown or downtown Duluth.
I’d love to know what YOU do when you are in Duluth and have a moment to spare. Do you have favorite areas to visit? Quiet places to get a quick cup of coffee? Walking trails or parks to stretch your legs? I have opened this post for comments…feel free to share with fellow Care Partners volunteers who may be looking for inspiration!

Indigenous First Art & Gift Shop is a great place to go just up from downtown Duluth!
Terri N recommends Stebner Park. “Stebner park is up the hill from the hospitals approximately 5 miles. Plenty of parking, nice walking path and picnic tables to have your lunch. Address 4860 Maple Grove Road, Hermantown, MN 55811.”
