Grief Group

Care Partners has begun a new twice-a-month Grief Group! The gatherings take place on the 2nd & 4th Monday from 6:30-8pm at Johnson Heritage Post, 115 W Wisconsin Street in Grand Marais. The Grief Group is open for individuals to drop in as often as they would like, and it will be led by Care Partners Care Coordinator Maggie Anderson.

Why are grief groups important?

We all have losses and we all grieve uniquely. Having a supportive place to speak about it can be healing by normalizing grief reactions. Grief is not a disease or a sign of weakness. It is a normal reaction to the loss of someone you had a relationship with, whether complicated or easy.

What can someone expect when they attend?

Though we will not be following a curriculum, each meeting will have a similar structure. You will find a supportive and safe environment in which to process, find community and feel connected rather than isolated in your grief. In sharing with others you can expect to find helpful ways to cope that you hadn’t considered. Most importantly there will be a non-judgmental environment specifically created to hold your grief.

Is there any screening or recommendation about who should attend and when?

All are welcome to attend any time. That being said, there can be a fine line between the signals of grief and the symptoms of depression. If your grief reactions get to the point where they are significantly affecting your functioning, seeing a therapist might be recommended.

Will we do anything but talk about grief?

Although caring conversation will be our primary focus, we will be open to exploring other activities and rituals that have helped people process grief. For example, music, poetry, photos and storytelling can be powerful ways to connect with grief and even help access stuck grief.

What if someone is a little apprehensive about attending?

Confidentiality in a small community is challenging. There will be specific reminders of the confidentiality ground rule as new people join in. Judgments are not permitted. Advice is given only if requested. “Shoulds” are forbidden. Grief is the natural reaction to having loved and lost someone.
